3D printing frees up machining capacity to customer work

Written by Mectalent | Apr 29, 2022 8:25:00 AM

Mectalent has utilized 3D printing, especially in the production of manufacturing aids, since the autumn of 2021, when a 3D composite printer was acquired for the house.

The composite, i.e. the extrudable material reinforced with carbon fiber filaments, is extremely durable and comparable in rigidity to aluminum.

- In the past, we manufactured aids, such as measuring and assembly jigs and soft jaws for machine tools, on our CNC machines. The machining time used to manufacture these was, of course, out of the production work done for our customers. Especially now that we are using cobots for production, 3D printing is being actively utilized on a daily basis. For cobots, we use it to print various tools and grippers, says Production Manager Tuomas Kemppainen.

We manufacture prototypes and quick models by 3D printing

For the customers, prototyping and quick models are easy to produce with 3D printing, without the need for tools or molds.

- In the case of laborious, complex and challenging shapes, 3D printing is faster than machining, because programming of a CNC machine takes a lot of time, says Kemppainen.

In addition to printing, we also handle the post-processing of 3D models according to the customer's needs.
